ToggleA study, published in the journal Science, looks to the distant future. The arrival of migrants on Mars in 2037 and the capture of Mars, as predicted, could Land on an Asteroid Between 2071 and 2087 and also pave the way for the colonization of moons and the moons’ orbits. In fact, a migratory journey to Mars in 2037.
Asteroid Orbits Are Not a Priority For The US Space Agency
In a recent poll, Americans said they would prefer NASA to focus on monitoring asteroid orbits and other potential hazards rather than focusing on human settlements on other planets. However, most of them still do not consider developing a military presence in space as a top priority for the space agency. That’s perhaps because they do not perceive asteroid orbits as a high priority, to begin with.
It is difficult to determine what will happen if the asteroid hits the Earth. In the short term, the odds of an asteroid hitting Earth are very low. For example, a one-kilometer-wide asteroid will experience a major collision once every few billion years. Currently, there is no effective way to stop the asteroid from approaching Earth’s orbit. But scientists have made some progress in understanding this phenomenon.
Earth-Grazers Are a Distinct Phenomenon
Meteors are a distinct kind of space debris. They can be either asteroids or comets and are named for their brightness and chemical composition. Comets, which are smaller than asteroid fragments, travel in an oval-shaped orbit around the Sun. The impact of either one on Earth could cause massive destruction. Even a relatively small asteroid could wipe out a major city.
Asteroid fragments fall to Earth’s surface because they’re attracted to the Earth’s gravity and may fall to the planet. Because of this, collisions with space objects have likely altered the evolution of life on Earth. If Earth-grazers hit the planet in the next few decades, it could seriously disrupt human life on the planet.
Astronomers estimate that there are as many as 100,000 asteroids in the solar system of estimated size, and only one will approach the planet. That means an asteroid could strike Earth every century. An asteroid weighing about 20 million tons could cause a devastating explosion that would level entire cities. It’s possible that Earth-grazers could hit Earth at a distance of a few kilometers.
Space Tourism Is a Major National Strategy
The space industry has entered a new phase: orbital tourism. Last year, SpaceX launched two NASA astronauts aboard its own spacecraft. The mission was historic not only for SpaceX and NASA but for the world, as it marked the first time a private company had sent a human into orbit. Previously, only superpower governments could achieve this feat. Now, even private companies are exploring the possibility of orbital tourism.
The private sector is stepping in to drive the space tourism industry. By increasing access to space, NASA hopes that the money generated will go towards achieving broader goals of exploration and science. Entrepreneurs have jumped at the opportunity. The Virgin Galactic CEO recently reported a “tremendous level of enthusiasm” from space enthusiasts. It should be no surprise that the space industry has become a major national strategy.
While a majority of people are skeptical about public space travel, many are still enthusiastic about space tourism. Despite the high initial costs of shuttle operations, it is likely that public perception will change once space travel becomes cheaper and safer. Fortunately, more companies are looking into public space tourism, and this could be the perfect time to get involved. In addition to universities, non-profit organizations can help publicize space tourism as a viable career option.
